October 6, 1991: President Daniel Arap Moi rejects the idea of life presidency and calls for a stop to any more proposals regarding the issue. He said the presidency in Kenya was elective and, therefore, the question of life presidency does not arise. Speaking outside the Kibera Africa Inland Church (AIC) after the Sunday service, President Moi said he was a strong believer in the country’s democratic procedures. “The responsibility of deciding the presidency is a matter for the electorate and, therefore, the question of legislating for life presidency is not valid,” he stated.
