Description

February 22, 1983: Pioneer African broadcaster Stephen Kikumu dies in Nairobi. Mr. Kikumu was first newsman to interview Mzee Jomo Kenyatta when he was released from detention. The legendary journalist joined African Broadcasting Service on its inception in 1953 and was seconded to BBC in London in 1958. When the Voice of Kenya (VOK)was inaugurated in 1964, Mr. Kikumu became its controller of radio programs. Here Mr. Kikumu (left) is seen interviewing Prime Minister Kenyatta on August 22, 1961.
