Description

July 25, 1993: The Ford Kenya secretary-general, Mr. Gitobu Imanyara (right), says the Goldenberg donation to Mr. Jaramogi Oginga Odinga (centre) was a bribe to stop his party from pursuing the financial scandals involving the firm. Mr. Imanyara and the MP for Lagdera, Mr. Farah Maalim, said that three weeks ago, Mr. Odinga had instructed party officials Paul Muite, Robert Shaw and Mr. Imanyara to drop the Goldenberg issue because it was very big and it could bring down individuals even in as far places as the House of Lords”. They said that Mr. Odinga, who is the party chairman, later called urgent meeting of the National Executive Council when he discovered that Mr. Shaw, who is the party’s deputy secretary for public policy and economic affairs, and Mr. Muite (the 1st vice-chairman) were not prepared to drop the Goldenberg issue. During the meeting, Mr. Shaw explained the operations of Goldenberg and how the company had colluded with the Central Bank (and a senior Government official) to steal billions of taxpayers’ money. Seen here in a press conference with 2nd vice-chairman Michael Wamalwa Kijana in October 1992.
