On January 17, 1974, Ahmed the elephant, famed for being the only animal granted full protection by a presidential decree in 1970, died at about 75 years old of natural causes. Ahmed had roamed near Marsabit, Northern Kenya, an area heavily affected by drought and protected by armed game scouts. Later, in August 1986, Ahmed’s stuffed remains were displayed at the National Museums of Kenya, shown to Botswana President Dr. Quett Masire and his wife, by Dr. Richard Leakey.
