October 31, 1984: India Prime Minister Indira Gandhi (left) is shot dead by a gunman in front of her home area. Mrs. Gandhi died as doctors were performing an operation to remove bullets in her stomach and chest. Witnesses earlier said that Mrs. Gandhi had been taken to hospital profusely bleeding after the attack. The gunmen had emerged from Mrs. Gandhi’s security guard and had opened fire on the Prime Minister with an automatic revolver. They then raised their hands and were immediately arrested. There was some confusion as to the identity and fate of her assailants with unconfirmed reports from eyewitnesses saying they were three members of Mrs. Gandhi’s own security force. Seen here with Kenyan Foreign Minister Dr. Munyua Waiyaki in January 1977 when he visited India.
