January 29, 1990: World champion Douglas Wakiihuri wins gold at the Commonwealth games marathon held at Auckland, Newland to give Kenya the first ever gold medal in this event. Wakiihuri, also the Seoul silver medalist clocked 2 hours, 10 minutes and 26 seconds to beat Australian Steve Moneghetti by several seconds. Tanzanian Simon Naali finished third. Kenya’s medal haul in the 14th Commonwealth Games in Auckland increased to six as Gedion Yego collected a silver in the 400 metres hurdles. Yego, who had won his heats with ease, lost out to Englishman Kriss Akabusi on the last stretch as other Kenyans – Joseph Maritim and Barnabas Kinyor – faded out into sixth and seventh positions. Canadian John Graham took the bronze. Seen here with his mother Lydia after arriving in the country from London.
