October 28, 1975: The MP for Vihiga, Mr. Peter Kibisu, is jailed for 15 months on an assault charge. Members of his family and supporters burst into tears as Kibisu, a former Assistant Minister for Labour, was sentenced. He changed his plea from not guilty to guilty on a charge of assaulting Mr. Edwin Holloway, causing him actual bodily harm, on April 23. He also admitted damaging. Mr. Holloway’s jacket and glasses, for which he was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, to run concurrently. “The facts of the convictions may well have repercussions on the accused’s life and career far beyond anything that this court may order,” said Nairobi Resident Magistrate Mr. Hugh Forks Boa. “Nevertheless, I regard this as gross and brutal act by the accused. As a parliamentarian he ought to have known better,” he said. Earlier, Mr. Kihara Muttu, a State Counsel, told the court that the accused’s changed plea was accepted. Mr. Muttu elaborated on the background of the case. Before the incident there was misunderstanding between the accused’s wife and the complainant.
