January 19, 1993: Former Nakuru North MP Koigi wa Wamwere and three co-accused are freed after the State enters a nolle prosequi in their treason case, Mr. Justice Samuel Oguk dismissed the treason charges against Mr. Wamwere, lawyers Rumba Kinuthia and Mirugi Kariuki and Mr. Geoffrey Kuria Kariuki after Deputy Public Prosecutor Bernard Chunga presented nolle proseque duly signed by the Attorney-General Amos Wako. Earlier in the day, President Moi had asked the Attorney-General to review the case against the four men. The President said the decision was taken after giving a serious thought to petitions from the families of the suspects asking him to look into the case. He said that although treason was the most serious crime against the State, he had asked the AG to review the case from purely humanitarian point of view.
