March 18, 1991: Former legislator George Moseti Anyona,(centre) who is on trial for alleged sedition, tells existence of ”torture chambers” at Nairobi’s Nyayo House where he said he was interrogated for 14 days last July. The place was “as silent as a grave he said. “The cells in the basement are dark, dirty and wet and torture chambers upstairs just pathetic.” Mr. Anyona said he was held at the Nyayo House for 14 days in contravention of Section 72(3) of the Kenya Constitution. “The cells condition was dehumanising and degrading. I was subjected to a lot of physical, mental and psychological torture he claimed in court. He said conditions in the basement cells are reminiscent of the story of Nazi Germany’s concentration camps or political prisoners were held In Tsarist, Russia. The whole chaos is that one does not know day or night.” He added. Seen here in court with Njeru Kathangu (left) and Kariuki Ngotho in court in July 1990.
