November 14 1978: Assistant Minister Mr. Simon Kairo (right) is reportedly picked up police and questioned about runaway Assistant Commissioner James Mungai Mr. Kairo reportedly helped Mungai flee to the Sudan. The fugitive police chief is his brother-in-law. Sources close to police said Mr. Kairo was escorted from his Nairobi home to the CID Headquarters by detectives. CID Director Mr. Ignatius Nderi would not comment. He said:’Mr. Kairo is not here. Look for him in town. Other police sources confirmed Mr. Kairo had been there, but had been released in the afternoon after making a statement. A secretary in Mr. Kairo’s office said the Assistant Minister was expected later. His house telephone was said to be “out of order,” and a telephone operator at the Naivasha Malaika Hotel, which Mr. Kairo owns, said he usually only visited at weekends. Mungai, the Assistant Commissioner of Police in Rift Valley Province, disappeared about two weeks ago. It was reported he had fled to the Sudan, and a warrant for his arrest was issued. Also in the picture is the COTU Deputy General-Secretary Mr. James Karebe.
