March 13, 1966: Kanu conference in Limuru oust Jaramogi Oginga Odinga as party’s Deputy President. The conference ended amid scenes of wild jubilation at Limuru as new national office-bearers to lead the party’s revitalisation programme were elected and amendments to the party Constitution were ratified by an overwhelming majority. Mr. Kenyatta was re-appointed unopposed as President of the party by acclamation and received a prolonged standing ovation before he delivered a short acceptance speech. Kenya’s Vice-President, Mr. Oginga Odinga walked out of the conference, having witnessed the sweeping majority with which amendments scrapping his formerly held position of Deputy President of the party were passed and without even being nominated as Kanu Vice-President for Nyanza Province. He now holds no office in the party. Mr. Odinga abstained from the voting and remained seated when all delegates rose for the President’s ovation. He walked out, after excusing himself to Mr. Kenyatta, who chaired the meeting, when Mr. Tom Mboya was re-elected Secretary-General by a crushing 326 votes to 80 polled by Mr. Masinde Muliro, former Vice-President of the now defunct Kadu Opposition, who was Mr. Mboya’s only opponent.
