December 7, 1996: The richest –ever Harambee in Kenya’s history takes place when the Preident Moi raised Sh578,320,064 for the National Youth Development kitty. The President gave a personal donation of Sh 2,697 484, a further Sh93,203,298 which he had raised from private individuals. He said the the Government had already contributed Sh200m to the fund. The previous record for a national Harambee stood at Sh141m raised on March 17, 1990 for the c at which the President donated Sh485,000. The Party of Independent Candidates of Kenya(PICK) boss was the only Opposition party who turned up at the Uhuru Park function. He donated Sh2.5M.“ I don’t want to boost Mr. Mwau’s standing but I am happy with the leader and people of PICK for their contribution,” President Moi said as he made a few remarks before announcing the total amount of money raised. President Moi receives donations during record-shattering Harambee at Uhuru Park, Nairobi.
