November 7, 1978: The Kenya Court of Appeal rules that five-year jail terms imposed on two MPs were correct. Chief Justice Sir James Wicks said the court could find no reason to depart from the conclusion of the High Court where the case had earlier been filed for appeal and of the trial court. Both MPs – Godfrey MuhurI Muchiri (left) of Embakasi) and Jesse Mwangi Gachago centre (Makuyu) were sent to jail for five years on February 2 by chief magistrate Mr. Fida Hussein Abdullah on a charge of stealing 485 bags of coffee worth 1,212,500/- in transit from Malaba to Mombasa between September 27 and 28, last year. The coffee belonged to Kenatco. An appeal filed by the two MPs in the High Court was dismissed in June and they made another appeal in the Court of Appeal. The Chief Justice heard the case, assisted by Mr. Justice S. W. Wambuzi and Mr. Justice E. Law.
