December 4, 2002: Presidential contender Mwai Kibaki is flown to London for specialised treatment, following the car crash in which he fractured his right arm and dislocated an ankle. Specialists there might screw metal plates to the bones so they knit faster and he can become mobile again more quickly, his personal doctor said. Dr Dan Gikonyo (second left) added that although Mr. Kibaki would have recovered fully in Nairobi Hospital, where he was taken after the Tuesday – night crash, they did not want to leave anything to chance. “He would be taken to Wellington Hospital, in upmarket St John’s Wood, north west London. Dr Gikonyo said: “We have done what we were able to do here and were quite happy with his progress and soon he should be back on the road to good health working as hard as possible.
