November 4, 2002: Transport minister Wycliffe Musalia Mudavadi (left) is named Vice-President as President Moi moved to reclaim support in Western Province. He replaces Prof George Saitoti, who was sacked on August 30, after declaring his support for what was then the Rainbow Alliance. Mr. Mudavadi, who celebrated his 42nd birthday on September 21, is Kenya’s seventh Vice-President since independence, and the fourth under President Moi’s rule. The announcement took even Mr. Mudavadi by surprise. He commented: “I am indeed honoured by the appointment.” He added: “I will continue to serve my President as Vice-President and party Kanu and at the same time work towards a better Kenya alongside other leaders.” He said it was a very clear signal from President Moi that he was determined to hand over the country to a younger generation.
