May 29, 1966: Former Minister for Co-operatives and Marketing, Mr. Paul Ngei, is reinstated as Minister for Housing. A Government statement said that the Maize Commission of Inquiry had found no evidence of any criminal offence having been committed by Mr. Ngei. He held the post of Housing Minister together with the portfolio for Social Services when he was suspended by President Kenyatta on February 23 this year . The Maize Commission presented its lengthy report to the President last Wednesday. The statement said: “The Commission, however, recommends that on accepting a Ministerial appointment, Ministers of the Government must declare to the President not only their own business interests but also the business interests of their wives, children and close relatives. “The Commission further recommends that, while it is not expected that politicians should dispose of their properties and interests on appointment to public office, they should be required to stop taking a personal interest in managing them.
