September 28, 1988: The Government re-employs the wife of detainee Raila Odinga, less than a month after retiring her from her teaching job in the public interest. The Minister for Education, Mr. Peter Oloo Aringo, confirmed last that Mrs. Idah Odinga had been reemployed. He said Mrs. Betty Idah Odinga would be re-deployed to the ministry’s headquarters. The Minister told the Nation on the telephone: “The Government, being mindful of the welfare of her people, has reinstated Mrs. Odinga. We also took into account her children’s education and welfare.” According to a story by AFP news agency, Mrs. Odinga confirmed her re-employment but said she had not been assigned specific duties. Mrs. Odinga was “retired” from her post at Kenya High School in the “public interest September 9 She received her dismissal letter, dated September 9, that morning. It required her to leave the school compound not later than September 12 as she had been retired in the public interest in accordance with regulation 73 (d) of the Teachers Service Commission code of regulations.
