September 26, 1993: Archbishop Desmond Tutu warns of the “new apartheid” of tribal division and called on Kenyans to reject it. The veteran campaigner against South African apartheid said: “We must not allow politicians in this country to introduce the new apartheid of dividing people along tribal lines and if a politician asks you to do certain things because you belong to a particular tribe, say No.” Speaking at an ecumenical service at Kisumu’s Moi Stadium, the Archbishop of Cape Town said: “In Jesus Christ there is no Kikuyu, Luo or Kalenjin. In Jesus Christ we are all one … the children of God.” In a wide-ranging condemnation of post-independence African governance, Archbishop Tutu said that many African leaders were guilty of gross misrule.
