History 260523

May 26, 1982: The Kenya African National Union (KANU) directs that one-party system in the country be legalised. The Kanu Governing Council (in the photo) also directed the Kanu Parliamentary Group and the Attorney-General to take immediate action to legalise the system. The governing council also expelled former Kitutu East MP George Moseti Anyona from the party for working against the interests of Kanu”. The decisions were taken at a marathon party meeting under the chairmanship of President Moi from 10.15 a.m. to 4 p.m. The National Executive Committee of Kanu met earlier under the chairmanship of President Moi and the governing council met later, also under the President’s chairmanship. The governing council passed resolutions, among which was one urging students at the University of Nairobi to concentrate on their studies and refuse to be dragged into politics.
