History 250124

January 25, 1997: Kenya goes a step further in its quest for a place in the 1998 Africa Cup of Nations finals when Harambee Stars beat Gabon’s Azingo Nationale 1-0 in a riveting match at the Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani. In dramatic fashion, Brooke Bond striker Michael Muiruri made his debut in the national team by scoring a magnificent goal in the 70th minute to earn three points. In a match watched by an estimated 30,000 fans, Stars missed more than a dozen chances, but when Muiruri put in the well timed header, it ensured the boys, who have won themselves the accolade “the Dream Team”, were well on their way to the top.
