HISTORY 241123

November 24, 1993: National leaders joyfully welcomes the restoration of aid to Kenya and sources close to the Paris talks said the key to success was the confidence which Finance Minister Mr. Wycliffe Musalia Mudavadi (left) instilled in the donors. Kanu Secretary-General Mr. John Joseph Kamotho, FORD Kenya chairman Oginga Odinga and Nairobi Mayor Steve Mwangi were among the first to hail the Consultative Group’s pledge of Sh58.6 billion ($850m) for 1994, including Sh11. 7 billion ($170m) in balance of payments support. However Mr. Robert Shaw warned “Nairobi will not be paved with gold,” and the chairman of the Nairobi Stock Exchange, Mr. Jimnah Mbaru said: “We do not know how much real money we shall receive, we do not know how much will go to debt arrears.” Mr Shaw, a FORD Kenya member, said the important point was not the resumption of aid but Kenya’s restoration of relations with the donors. Here, The Minister for Finance, Mr Musalia Mudavadi, holding his two-year old son Moses, is welcomed by an Assistant Minister for Land Reclamation, Regional and Water Develoment, Mr Andrew Ligale, on arrival at the Jomo Kenyatte International Airport from Paris, France in November 1993.
