April 24, 1992: Society Editor Pius Nyamora (centre), his wife Loyce (right) and three of the weekly magazine’s writers are released by a Mombasa court on a Sh300,000 bond each with two sureties. However, they will all be required to report to the Central Police Station in Nairobi every Friday until further notice. Chief Magistrate Joseph Karanja Kanyi’s release orders were greeted with thunderous applause by a large crowd in the courtroom. The release follows two application filed on Tuesday by counsel Mr. Lumatete Muchai, who was assisted by four other advocates. Mr. Nyamora and his wife – both co-directors of Nyamora Communications which publishes Society – assistant managing editor Mwenda Njoka and writers Mukalo Kwayera and Laban Gitau were remanded in police custody on Tuesday on 11 counts of sedition. They had not changed their clothes since their arrest in Nairobi on April 16. The sedition charges relate to articles published in Society from late last year which the State says were published with intent to incite hatred, contempt or disaffection against the President of Kenya and the Kenya Government.
