History 230724

July 23, 1970: Mr. Charles Asati, (infront) a 24 –year old Kenya soldier wins Kenya’s second gold medal of the ninth Commonwealth Games in his fabulous 40.5sec. in the 400 metres broke nearly every record in the book. In beating Ross Wilson of Australia into second place, Mr. Asati set a new Commonwealth games record. Mr. Asati’s victory was one of the most spectacular of the games so far but a predicted one. Mr. Asati opened with 46.5 sec in his first heat, brought it down to 45.8 sec in the next and then 45.5 sec to book a place in the semi-finals. Kenya’s Ben Jipcho wins silver medal after finishing second to Tony Manning of Australia in 3000 metres. Amos Biwott took the bronze. By the end of the afternoon the Kenyans had raced past their eight-medal total of the Jamaica Games in 1966 to end the day with two gold, one silver and five bronze with the certainty of at least three more silver medals from the boxing finals tomorrow.
