May 23, 1966: The registrar of Societies, Mr. D. J Coward, confirms that the Kenya People’s Union led by the former Vice-President of Kenya, Mr. Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, is formally registered. Mr. Coward confirmed a claim on registration made by the party’s assistant executive officer, Mr. Dennis Akumu, at a Press conference. Mr. Akumu reaffirmed that the KPU was a national party and added: “We are going to surprise Kanu by winning the Little Elections with a big majority. “He thanked President Kenyatta for having overcome the ambitions of his younger hot headed Ministers and acting in accordance with the law of the country and the Constitution to register our party.” Mr. Akumu said the KPU assured President Kenyatta that it would act within the bounds of the law and we shall be a loyal opposition all the time relying only on ballot box.
