May 20, 1975: President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta swears in Mr. Justice Chunnilal Bhagwandas Madan (second left) (better known as C.B. Madan) as acting Chief Justice of Kenya. Mr. Justice Madan, pledged among other things to preserve, protect and uphold the Constitution of Kenya. The Attorney General. Mr. Charles Njonjo (on Mzee’s right), the Deputy Public Prosecutor, Mr. James Boro Karugu (left) were also present at the ceremony which took place at State House, Mombasa. President Kenyatta wished Mr. Justice Madan luck in his new appointment, and asked him to face his responsibilities with courage. “Do not hesitate to consult me whenever you need my counsel,” the President said.
