History 181023

October 18, 2001: A major terrorism alert is sounded throughout Kenya after it was confirmed that deadly anthrax had been found in Nairobi, contained in a letter from Atlanta, Georgia. Two other packets suspected to contain anthrax were still undergoing laboratory tests, said Health Minister Sam Ongeri. One was a letter sent to a family in Nyeri and the other a parcel from Pakistan sent to the UN at Gigiri. A government taskforce has been set up to tackle what is feared to be biological terrorism. Hotels, businesses and the postal corporation have all been put on high alert and the government issued a general warning to all Kenyans to be wary of suspicious letters from mysterious persons, groups or organisations. In the photo, Businesswoman Margaret Mukundi displays a suspect parcel delivered to her office in the city centre which she had not opened fearing it might contain anthrax powder. The government has asked wananchi to be on the alert. Photo|Nation Syndication
