History 170524

May 17, 1982: The suspension of six top Gor Mahia players is endorsed by the Kenya Football Federation (KFF) The suspension period ranges from one to three years. The players are: Mike Ogolla, George Ayuka, Charles Ondiek and Andrew Obunga (three years) and Nashon Oluoch and George Yoga (one year) But Gor Mahia as a club was cleared provided it pays Ksh 10,000/= fine imposed on the KFF by the African Football Confederation (CAF). The six suspended players were accused of playing a leading role when 19 Gor Mahia players boycotted a training camp in preparation for the Africa Cup Winners Cup tournament against Dynamo de Fimia of Madagascar. The trip to Tananarive, consequently, had to be cancelled because Gor Mahia Club was unable to raise a team. KFF chairman Clement Gachanja told a well-attended press conference that considerable pressure had been exerted from some quarters for banning Gor Mahia for failure to send a team to Madagascar for the second-leg tie of the tournament. Flanked by KFF vice-chairman Richard Pamba and secretary-general Mahallon Danga, Mr. Gachanja said it was wrong to compare the current issue with that of the Kenya Breweries Football Club in 1979 when Breweries’ officials refused to send a team to Mogadishu for the East and Central Africa Soccer Club championships (the club was suspended for a year).
