July 16, 1980: University of Nairobi lecturer is released after being questioned by police. Dr. Peter Anyang Nyong’o (second from left) a senior lecturer in the Department of Government, had been picked up the previous day. Dr. Anyang Nyong’o was given a hero’s welcome in the University Great court. As he climbed the dais, thousands of students and lecturers chanted: “A people united can never be defeated. Dr. Anyang Nyong’o, said: “I greatly I appreciate your love for me. I greatly appreciate your great love for truth. I am happy to be here. I am happy to be with you. Thank you all for your effort and solidarity to get me out . I will pray for you just like you prayed for me. He told the gathering. We shall talk more about this later. ” As he stepped down,. the crowd again chanted: “A people united can never be defeated. “Welcoming the lecturer, an official of the University Staff Union said the release was a victory for the university. He said it showed the determination of the university community to act in solidarity. He also observed that the lecturer release was not the end of the matter. He said the staff union would meet later in, the day to review what Dr. Anyang Nyong’o arrest symbolised. Another union official also hailed the development. He urged students to resume classes which they had boycotted earlier in the day.
