January 11, 1992: Former Vice-President Josephat Njuguna Karanja (right) and former Mathira MP Eliud Matu Wamae are arrested, apparently in connection with a widespread rumour that President Moi was planning to hand over the Government to the military. Dr. Karanja, the immediate former Vice-President, was among a group of FORD activists and members of the Forum’s Steering Committee who addressed the Press on Friday afternoon and accused the President of planning a military take-over. Sources said Mr. Wamae was to participate in the press conference but did not attend. The Government on Friday night dispelled rumours of the alleged military take-over. The Head of the Civil Service and Secretary to the Cabinet, Prof Philip Mbithi, said in a signed statement that the rumours were spread by the opposition’s leaders and were intended to cause and spread worry, unrest, fear, despondency and alarm among law-abiding citizens Dr. Karanja was pounced on at 3.50 pm by five policemen about 100 metres from the exclusive Muthaiga Golf Club, and frog marched into a blue Peugeot 504 station wagon, Registration No KAB 189A, and driven off to an unknown destination.
