May 9, 1989: The Speaker of the National Assembly attacks a Nairobi lawyer, Mr. Gibson Kamau Kuria for claiming that the motion of no confidence passed against former Vice-President Josephat Njuguna Karanja was “null and ‘void”. In a statement from the chair, after question time, the Speaker, Mr. Moses Keino, called Mr. Kuria’s allegations “totally baseless, contemptuous and obnoxious” The lawyer’s comments were published in the Standard newspaper of May 5, 1989. Mr. Keino said that contrary to what Mr. Kuria had claimed, all parliamentary procedures with regard to the motion were followed to the letter. And he emphasised that the record of the House “should whenever and wherever quoted be quoted correctly’, more so by trained lawyers.
