May 9, 1997: Ford Asili Chairman Kenneth Matiba (right) publicly challenges Lang’ata MP Raila Odinga to state categorically whether he would support him in removing President Moi from power. “I am saying good-bye to you right here if you do not promise to join me to remove Moi from State House he told Mr. Odinga, when the two were touring the Korogocho slum.”Please tell the people if you will join me to do that right here because I will not call you to any other meeting to say so!” Mr Matiba said, handing over the microphone to Mr Odinga … Accepting the microphone, Mr. Odinga told the crowd: “I have been asked a question and I wish to assure you that I will support you!” Mr Matiba was addressing hundreds of residents of Korogocho when he toured the sprawling slum area accompanied by Mr Odinga, area MP Ochieng Mbeo and legislators Kamau lcharia (Kiambaa), Philip Gitonga (Lari), former area MP Munyua Waiyaki and several FORD-Asili and National Development Party of Kenya officials.
