History 080724

July 8, 1993: The Government discloses in Parliament that the police shot 29 people during the 1990 Saba Saba riots at the heights of campaign for multi-party elections. However, the victims names and circumstances in which they were shot could not be discussed as the killings were already in court as an inquest, an Assistant Minister in the Office of The President Mr. Arthur Moody Awori told Parliament. Nonetheless, the Speaker Mr. Francis ole Kaparo ordered Mr. Awori to take to the House on Tuesday the cause number of the inquest and the details of the court hearing it. Otherwise, he said the House would be empowered to ask questions on the matter and debate it openly. The issue had been raised by the MP for South Imenti Mr. Kiraitu Murungi (Ford –Kenya). He wanted to know how many people have been shot by security forces on July 7, 1990 during Saba Saba disturbances , their names and the circumstances they were shot. Photo|Nation Syndication
