History 031123

November 3, 1970: The famous Coast witchdoctor, Tsuma Washe, better known as “Kajiwe” (centre) is detained by the Government, it was officially announced in Mombasa. The 33-year old witchdoctor was arrested at his Rabai home last weekend. Announcing the detention at a press conference, the Coast PC Mr. Isaac Mathenge said he had been arrested and detained because he mixed politics and witchcraft and converted his house into an oathing centre. Giving a lengthy account of Kajiwe’s activities Mr. Mathenge who was in his office with Mr. F.J Muoka , Assistant Commissioner of Police said Kajiwe engaged himself in primitive, unlawful, anti-social practices, misleading easily gullible people to a relapse into ancient tribal customs utterly incompatible with conditions in Kenya today. Here, the former Coast witchdoctor, Mr. Tsuma Washe, better known as “Kajiwe,” was among hundreds of donors at the fund-raising conducted by Vice-President Mr. Daniel arap Moi in aid of Mazeras Secondary School. Kajiwe is pictured with his wives, giving their donations to Mr. Moi in June 1976.
