History 020824

August 2, 1996: Councillor John King’ori is knocked off the city mayor’s perch by little known Cllr Dick Waweru (In the picture_, as embattled Kisumu Mayor Lawrence Akinyi Oile weathered the electoral storm to win a third term. In a surprise turn of events, Mr. King’ori failed to show up at the venue of the poll leaving the path clear for Mr. Waweru to go in unopposed. There was confusion at City Hall as Provincial Commissioner Francis Lekolool and Town Clerk Hezron Oluoch waited for the Mayor and his entourage to turn up. After a two-hour wait, the PC decided to go ahead with the elections, upon confirming that there was a quorum. Mr. King’ori later said he was shocked the election had gone on, claiming that the PC had duped him into missing the poll. He explained that Mr. Lekolool had left him waiting for the PC at an unspecified venue and then proceeded to conduct the election.
