August 1, 1997: A Minister of State in the Office of the President, Mr. John Koech (right)announces that he had resigned from the Cabinet with immediate effect. Mr. Koech, who was accompanied by a bodyguard, entered the Nakuru Nation bureau just before 5 pm and asked to be shown the person in charge. After shaking hands with the bureau chief, Mr. Koech asked for a piece of paper and said he had an impotant news item he wanted to release and wrote down the following. “His Excellency, President Daniel arap Moi, EGH, MP, President of Kenya. Dear Sir, I have resigned as your Minister. I shall give a comprehensive statement on Monday August 4 and signed. John arap Koech, Minister of State, OP Asked to comment on his action, an agitated Mr. Koech replied: “Frustration! Frustration! This is an open letter to the President. I Cannot change my mind. I have resigned! I am no longer Moi’s Minister!” He continued: “I am now a very happy man. Don’t you think so?” and laughed as he and his bodyguard stood up, ready to leave. Mr. Koech had just attended a presidential function Forestry Training College in Londiani. He said he had been contemplating the resignation during the past month. “I will have sound sleep tonight!
