March 1, 1985: Expelled student leader Julius Mwandawiro Mghanga (centre) says he wishes to conduct his own defence against charges of taking part in an illegal assembly. The immediate past chairman of Sudents Organisation of Nairobi University (SONU) requested a copy of the charges against him, the Constitution of Kenya, several law books and stationery. He was speaking before the Chief Magistrate Mr. H.H Buch who was to rule on bail application by Mr. Mwandawiro and 18 university students. Addressing Mr. Buch, Mr. Mwandawiro said: Your Honour, these facilities will enable me conduct my own defence in the case facing me. The Chief magistrate asked prison authorities to provide Mr. Mwandawiro with the requested items. Mr. Mwandawiro faces five other charges of convening illegal assemblies at the university’s Great court on February 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. He faces another charge of trespassing on the university grounds.
