January 26, 1993: Francis Xavier Ole Kaparo is elected Speaker of the National Assembly amid acrimonious exchanges inside Parliament and anti-Government protests outside the August House. Mr. Kaparo defeated a former Speaker Mr. Moses arap Keino on the third vote by a simple majority of 112 votes to 53 with one spoilt ballot. Ford Asili MPs abstained in the elections which marked the start of the Seventh Parliament. After election, the new speaker is seen here swearing President Moi in his capacity as a Member of Parliament for Baringo Central.
