January 25, 1971: An Announcement is made that the Ugandan Army has taken over power from the Government of President Milton Obote and that it will be headed by Major-general Idi Amin Dada, (Right) Commander of the Armed Forces and of the Uganda Air Force, was greeted with joy by the people of Kampala. The announcement of the take-over came after a night and morning of shooting in the streets which threw the city into panic and confusion. In this photo, the new head of State Maj.-Gen Amin and the Inspector of police Mr. Erenayo Wilson Oryema who has pledged support to the new regime taken in 1969 when they went to see off the Pope after his historic visit to Uganda.
