Demonetization

Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) Governor Patrick Njoroge holds briquettes made from the old Sh 1000 notes during a briefing to journalists on the demonetization of the Ksh 1000 note. Kenyans returned the old Sh1,000 notes worth Sh209.6 billion out of the Sh217 billion in circulation as at June 1st 2019 when the new look currency was announced by Government. Sh7.38 billion of the old currency was not returned to the banking system by close of the deadline on October the 1st 2019.
