March 22, 2013: The world is united in mourning the death of renowned Nigerian author Chinua Achebe (centre) after a brief illness in Boston, US. A statement from his family to the BBC said Mr. Achebe’s “wisdom and courage” were an “inspiration to all who knew him”. One of Africa’s best known authors, his 1958 debut novel Things Fall Apart, told of the tragic story of Okonkwo in late 19th-century Nigeria as Christian missionaries began their work in the region 10 million copies. The 82-year-old author had been living in the US since 1990 following injuries from a car crash. Mr. Henry Chakava, his local publisher, said he last met the legend in London two years ago during an event to mark 50 years of his writing.
