March 31,1974: President Jomo Kenyatta defines and defends the paramountcy of Kenya’s ruling party, Kanu, “whose existence, policies and image must be respected by everyone in the country” Addressing a rally at Nakuru’s Afraha Stadium, President Kenyatta, who was also the ruling Party’s President, received a thunderous applause when he declared: “Kanu is Kenya’s ruling Party and we will not allow the formation of another party” adding that “Kanu is the father and mother of the Government” Here, President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta is joined by Minister for Local Government Mr. Lawrence Sagini (left), the Vice President Mr. Daniel Arap Moi and other Ministers and delegates in singing “Kanu Yajenga Nchi” at the close of a Kanu conference on July 28, 1968.
