October 4, 1961: Kanu president Mr. James Gichuru steps down for Mzee Jomo Kenyatta following Kenyatta’s release from detention on August 14, 1961. The party formally requests Kenyatta to take over its presidency and Gichuru immediately takes the post of chairman of the Parliamentary group.
