January 30, 1964: Kenya Government says is to launch a National Youth Service, the Minister for labour, Mr. Ngala Mwendwa, announces in Nairobi. An initial 3,000 young men and women will be recruited into the service – 500 from each of the six units to be set up in different regions of Kenya. A committee of eight Ministers has been_ formed to finalise arrangements , regarding the formation of the youth service under the chairmanship of Mr. Mwendwa. The service will be on a voluntary basis. Youths will volunteer for a minimum period of one year during which time they will receive food, uniforms and a small sum’ of money.
