January 20, 1983: Nyando MP. Mathew Onyango Midika (in hand cuffs) is jailed for four years for stealing 210,000/= from a workers union. James Onyango Nyangima and Francis Adenye Ngige jointly charged with Midika are acquitted. Mr. Midika, Secretary-General of the Union of Sugar Plantation Workers. Mr. Nyangima is its trustee and Mr. Ngige the treasurer. They were accused of stealing the money from the union’s Miwani branch between January 12 and October 17 last year. Some people were seen crying after Senior Resident Magistrate R.C.S Omolo finished reading his four-hour judgment. Mr. Omolo said the 210, 000/= had not been given to Midika as a gift but as part of Harambee contribution towards secondary school in Nyando constituency. He said Mr. Midika had no right to convert the money donated by the Miwani Sugar Mill workers to his own use.
