August 25, 1964: Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda (right) Northern Rhodesia’s Prime Minister is elected unopposed as President-designate of Zambia. Northern Rhodesia becomes the independent State of Zambia on October 24. Following the announcement by Sir Diarmaid Conroy, Northern Rhodesia’s Chief Justice to a cheering crowd in front of the steps of the High Court here, several of Dr. Kaunda’s supporters rushed up and, thrusting the Zambian leader on their shoulders chaired him in front of the wildly cheering gathering. Dr. Kaunda, 40. has been Prime Minister since January this year.
