April 14, 1966: Vice-President Jaramogi Oginga Odinga resigns and launches a bitter criticism of Kanu and the Government. He hinted that he would stay on as a Member of Parliament but stayed silent if he will form a political party .President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta accepted his resignation. The resignation, announced by Mr. Odinga at a news conference in Nairobi, brought to a head the controversy sparked by the heated attack by the Vice -President on Cabinet colleagues last month. The controversy reached still higher temperatures at the Limuru Conference when the Kanu Constitution was amended and Mr. Odinga was left without a single top post when it was decided to abolish the position of Deputy President of the party. In this photo, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, meets Jimmy, one of the Dr. Barnado’s Homes boys in Nairobi, on his visit to the homes accompanied by the home’s chairman, Mr. Charles Njonjo, the Attorney-General in May 1965.
