June 1, 1967: Brigadier Joseph Musyimi Ndolo (left) Commander of the Kenya Army and Bernard Hinga Commissioner of Police headed 84 heroes named in the first Madaraka Day Honours list announced by President Kenyatta (right). The president placed clear emphasis on bestowing honour on heroes of the long campaign against shifta bandits. Brig. Ndolo and Mr. Hinga both received the Order of the Burning Spear (2nd Class) one of the nation’s top honours.
