January 5, 1992: Over 50 armed policemen raids a Nairobi printing firm and stopped the publication of 30,000 copies of this week’s Society magazine. Later in the day, the Government obtained an ex-parte court injunction restraining the magazine owners from publishing, distributing or selling it. Police Commissioner Philip Kilonzo said police received information that the Society issue contained literature that ridiculed the President. – The information received was to the effect that the said magazine, both on its front cover and the inside contents contained pictures, words and articles which were false, inflammatory and clearly intended to bring into hatred or contempt, or to excite disaffection, against the person of the President,” Mr Kilonzo’s statement said. He said that this was in contravention of the Penal Code and other Kenvan laws. The Commissioner said police seized the available materials on the publication which will be dealt with according with the law.
