December 26, 1999: Retired Major General George Agoi (centre) is appointed ambassador to Ethiopia. President Moi said he had made the appointment because of General Agoi’s exemplary military career and because he came from an excellent background. The general retired as head of the Army’s Eastern Command at the beginning of this month. At the same time it was reported that highly placed military sources revealed they were investigating a financial scandal at the Department of Defence. Major General Agoi came to public attention as the commander of the rescue operations after the August 7 bomb blast at the US embassy in Nairobi. Shortly afterwards he again hit the headlines when he was carjacked in a Nairobi suburb and his revolver was stolen. In the photo, Search and Rescue Commander, Major General, George Agoi, briefs president Moi and members of the clergy from various denominations at the bomb site in August 1998.
