September 25, 1979: Mr. Jeremiah Gitau Kiereini is appointed Head of the Civil Service, and Permanent Secretary in the Office of the President. Mr. Kiereini replaces Mr. Geoffrey Karekia Kariithi, who retired. Mr. Kiereini will continue as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Defence President Moi said the appointment of Mr. Kiereini, 50, as Permanent Secretary in the Office of the President had taken effect following the retirement of Mr, Kariithi, who worked for the Government for 28 years. Mr. Kiereini will also be secretary to the Cabinet. Saying he had accepted Mr. Kariithi’s retirement with regret, President Moi said the retiring official had served the Government with total loyalty and devotion. He wished him a happy retirement.
